Atari Inc. ATARI 2600 VIDEO GAME VERSION. GREAT GAME. ALL-TIME GREAT. RARE HARD TO FIND GAME. GREAT FOR COLLECTORS. Storyline: RESCUE THE HUMANOIDS Earth's "friendship" signals, beamed into deep space and beyond the Milky Way, have attracted extraterrestrial beings, all right, but not the ones we expected. Now wave after wave of warlike Aliens from some unidentified solar system "home in" and attack. In the cockpit of Universal Space Ship Defender, you wait tensely, watching your scanner for approaching aliens. There they are! First comes a lone Bomber, laying space mines. You pick that off with your laser missiles with no trouble. But an innocent-looking Pod ship explodes when you hit it, releasing clusters of missile- splitting Swarmers. Whew! That was close! Now what? Your Scanner shows a convoy of saucer-shaped Baiters coming fast and escorting a squadron of Landers. Space Intelligence has informed you that the Landers' diabolical mission is to kidnap Earth's Humanoids and transform them into hideous flying Mutants programmed to destroy the cities and take over the Earth. In the city below, Humanoids run helter-skelter through the streets like frightened ants. Some cower in doorways, hoping, no doubt, that the Landers will overlook them. No chance! Look! See that terrified Humanoid wriggling helplessly in the force of the Lander beam? No time to lose! Thrust out and blast that Lander with your laser missiles. There! That got him. Now dive down and catch the Humanoid. Hurry! Hurry! He's falling fast! —From the Atari 2600 Defender instruction manual.

Use the fire button to get Mario to jump over the barrels. Will Mario make it to the top and rescue his gal in time? Plays, sounds and scores just like the arcade game. Video game cartridge for use with the Atari Video Computer System and Sears Video Arcade.
Dig Dug
Atari Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game in which you have to use your shovel to dig your way through the earth. Stopping you from doing this are two monsters, called Pooka and Fygar, who will continually chase you around. The only weapon that you carry is an air pump, which you can use to inflate the monsters to the point where they explode. (if you start to inflate them but stop doing so, the monsters will get turned back to their normal selves.) Furthermore, rocks are scattered throughout the earth, and you can use these rocks to squash them. If the monsters do not find you for several seconds, they will eventually get turned into ghosts, which are able to walk through the earth. They are invincible and cannot be killed. From time to time, vegetables will appear in the center, and you can get these for points.

Joust
Atari How on earth did you fall into this bizarre world? Look around you — the sky is filled with knights astride enormous armored buzzards. These characters look mean, and the buzzards they ride don't look very friendly either. THE JOUST The objective of JOUST is to defend yourself and score points by unseating opponents in a joust. The winner of a joust is the rider whose mount is highest at the moment of contact. If the mounts are of equal height, the joust is a draw. Your opponents are the Buzzard Riders. There are three types, each more dangerous than the last: the Bounders (wearing red), the Hunters (wearing gray), and the Shadow Lords (wearing blue). When you unseat a Buzzard Rider in a joust, he and his mount turn into an egg and float ominously around the jousting arena. If you grab the egg, it will disappear and you'll score bonus points. If you don't grab the egg it will eventually hatch into an even more dangerous opponent. When you lose a joust, you'll materialize again on the bottom ledge — if you have any lives remaining. Until you fully materialize, you're protected from attack. Once your bird is moved, however, you become fair game for a joust.

Super Dodge Ball Advance
Atlus Dodge ball, the schoolyard sport in which kids bean each other with rubber balls thrown at welt-raising velocity, really is the sport of bullies. Thankfully, Super Dodge Ball Advance presents an experience in which the welts aren't included, while lots of fun and laughs are.

The game features two teams of squat, cartoonish, big-headed kids. Some are on the playing field and some reside in the back zone ready to scoot up a lob and nail an opponent in the back or from the side. The animations, particularly when a kid gets squashed, are amusing, and, after all, are also the point of the game. Amass points and win the match, then move on to the next horde of big-headed kids.

There are several kinds of throws you can make to surprise your opponents, including a cool corkscrew throw and a straight-up overhanded bean ball. As you knock teams out (no pun intended), you advance toward the world competition (shades of South Park here), where you represent your favorite nation. You can also link up with an opponent for a little head-to-head action, which is the best way to dish out some virtual pain onto local bullies who lack your mad video gaming skills. —Andrew S. Bub

Pros:It's virtual dodge ball! What's not to like? It's one of the first sports games for the GBAThe graphics are perfect and the action is fastCons:The sound is a little grating

Realizing that the owners of this ship would eventually come looking for it, the world stopped its violence & came together for a common cause. As they studied this incredible new science, they began using it to build defenses — creating powerful mobile battle units called Personal Troopers. Now, the human race watches the skies and waits for an invasion from beyond...

Breath of Fire
Capcom Since the early '90s, the Breath of Fire series has been a staple on both the Super Nintendo and Sony PlayStation systems. This version for the Game Boy Advance is a perfect handheld port of the original Super Nintendo game that started it all.

The story is standard, but solid, fare—you are Ryu, a member of the White Dragon clan, and your task is to save the world from the Black Dragon clan. In times past, the two clans were actually one clan, but split in a horrendous war due to an evil and meddling goddess. While the White clan has maintained peace since then, the Black clan hasn't. Get the drift?

While the story is fairly black and white (pardon the pun), the gameplay itself is where the game shines. Each character has unique skills and abilities that unlock special areas of the game. For example, Ryu can fish if he finds a fishing pole. Later in the game, he can transform into a dragon during battle. Another character can walk through forests unimpeded and shoot animals for food. What's neat about this system is that as you gain companions with different skills, you can go back to earlier parts of the game to unlock areas that are only accessible via their skills. This adds to the replay value and depth of the game.

The battle system is the standard turn-based, random-encounter biscuits and gravy that most console gamers have come to expect. While not as engrossing as, say, Golden Sun's battle system, the shape-shifting at higher levels adds some enjoyment while fighting the ubiquitous nasties. Two added feature for the GBA version are automatic fighting, which is good for when you don't want to go through all the motions of turn-based combat, and an ability to swap items with a friend's version of the game through the separately sold link cable.

The graphics and sound are decent, but largely unimproved from the original SNES version, so they will seem dated. However, if you are into 16-bit, 2-D role-playing games, you'll find that the graphics look good on the GBA's screen. The sound is a faithful reproduction, but can sound tinny at times. —Bryan Karsh

Pros:Fun skill system that allows you to unlock hidden areas in the gameLink option to trade items with friendsAuto fighting option for those endless battlesA nice story and a huge world to exploreCons:Too many random battlesGraphics are datedSound is a little tinny
Breath of Fire II
Capcom Larger in scope than its predecessor and better in almost every way, Breath of Fire II is a perfect port of the original SNES game, and will leave role-playing fans begging for more.

The game starts out, dreamlike, in a small border village 500 years after the events of the first game. You play a small boy named Ryu (ring a bell?) who is looking for his lost sister. After finding his sister and reuniting her with pops, Ryu wanders around a bit and returns home—and that's when things really start to get interesting. To go further than that would risk spoiling the story, but we can say that the plot is really topnotch this time around and has three alternate endings.

Graphically, the game is a huge jump from the original. The towns are larger, the character sprites are more detailed, and the field map is gorgeous. You see weather effects such as rain and drifting clouds, wandering animals and jumping fish, and plants blowing in the breeze. If you have any experience with the best 16-bit RPGs for the SNES, like Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, you get the idea.

The characters are completely new in the series, and have brand-new skills. The only exception is Ryu (who isn't the original Ryu, but basically has the same skills). Like the original Breath of Fire, certain areas of the game are only accessible by using the skills of your party members. For example, one of your members can turn into a frog, and can ferry you across rivers and streams.

Among the changes to Breath of Fire II is that fishing and hunting have bigger roles; they're now minigames that require technique and reward with items that can advance the story. An animated monster image shows up on the field menu to give you an idea how often you'll encounter the baddies—nice for avoiding all those random battles. There's also the new Guts stat, which will sometimes allow a character to fight even when he should be knocked out. The two coolest additions are town creation (where you get to build and populate your own town), and the new fusion system, which allows your characters to "fuse" with shamans that you encounter, thus joining and augmenting their powers. In a nutshell, this game improves upon the best parts of the original. —Bryan Karsh

Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament
Namco Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament gives you a chanc to race against time to become the Dream Champion. In this fast-paced, colorful side-scroller you'll guide Klonoa as he tries to beat other travelers in the Dream Champ Tournament. Klonoa: Empire of Dreams
NAMCOBAND The weirdest ears in gaming come to the Game Boy Advance in Klonoa: Empire of Dreams. Klonoa, the supercute critter with limblike ears, must help Emperor Jillius, who has been struck with a strange illness that robs him of the ability to dream. It's up to Klonoa to defeat the monsters that are terrorizing the empire and solve the mystery behind the emperor's ailment.

Featuring 40 levels spanning five worlds, this title mixes up gameplay nicely. Action stages are traditional 2-D platform levels, similar to classic Mario and Sonic games. In these levels, Klonoa runs or rides a hover board through obstacle-filled lands. Boss stages pit Klonoa against a large creature with a hidden weak point. The most engaging levels are the puzzle stages, which require Klonoa to gather three keys to unlock the exit. These stages are very well designed, requiring thought and imagination on the player's part. In order to reach some keys, Klonoa will need to grab certain objects, monsters, or a combination thereof to reach his goal. Because each monster produces a different effect when thrown, and various surfaces react differently when hit, lots of trial and error is required.

Although the game's graphics are very bright, they aren't as detailed as in other GBA games. The sound is excellent, but the cute music and effects—particularly the gibberish language spoken by the characters—might be annoying to older gamers. Those with an aversion to cuteness should just hit the mute button, sit back, and enjoy one of the best platform games for the GBA. —Raymond M. Padilla

Pokemon Ruby
Nintendo Pokémon Ruby's updated graphics with weather effects, amazing sound, more than 200 Pokémon with over 100 new species—as well as its faithful adherence to the existing series of Pokémon games—makes for a welcome evolution in the series.

First, the game has a lot in common with Pokémon games Silver, Gold, and Crystal. For example, players can choose to be a boy or a girl trainer, an internal clock sets events at certain times, and you're the game's handy-dandy Pokédex helps players keep track of the many stats. You're main goal is still to beat all the Gym Trainers and become the Pokémon Master. If you've played the old games, you will be right at home. But not all is the same.

The most obvious change is in the battles themselves. Now that two Pokémon can fight on your side at the same time, you can tag-team them against an enemy by taking advantage of the strengths of your Pokémons while covering their weaknesses. For example, you can now have a water Pokémon watch your fire Pokémon's back. You can also attack more than one Pokémon at a time.

A whole new element to the game focuses on how berries are used in battle. And if you collect enough berries, you can take them to a Berry Blender and make a PokéBlock, which is a little super-charged candy that raises your Pokémon's "Condition" attributes. You can then groom your Pokémon for regional contests and compete for ribbons like "Best of Show," which will unlock additional contests. There's even strategy in how to best use your berries: pick too many and the berry tree will disappear; plant berries, though, and a tree will grow. You can also build a Secret Base in special areas of the game, which you can decorate just like you can your room.

And let us not forget that Pokémon Ruby has a kickin' multiplayer system, too. You can trade Pokémon, and link up to four players for incredible battles. The only downside is that you can't link up with the old Game Boy Color games. —Bryan Karsh

Pros:You can control two Pokémon in battleMuch needed graphic and sound faceliftNice multiplayer feature (requires link cable and extra game cartridge)Cons:Can't trade Pokémon with Game Boy Color

The landscape changes with each season, and though trees will be in full bloom in summer, during the winter months they'll lose their leaves, enabling Link to squeeze past them and enter new areas. If you want to collect all of the cards, you must play human opponents in the Pop mode to get a chance to earn rare cards. All of the complexity of the real-world game has been captured here. Play POKÉMON TRADING CARD GAME and become a Pokémon Card Master.
Pokemon Puzzle Challenge
Nintendo In a rising pit of colored blocks, it's your task to continuously eliminate these tiles by switching two tiles' positions on the horizontal row. When three or more tiles link up in a up/down or left/right fashion, they disappear. Gravity kicks in and settles the rest of the tiles into the bin ? this can cause a chain reaction to occur since other blocks of the same color can fall into place next to each other. It's up to you to continuously work the bin to wipe out tiles by making combination connections and chain reactions. That's the game in a nutshell, but there are several modes of play that'll keep your fingers busy. In the game's Challenge mode, for example, you're up against a computer opponent and you'll have to make combos and chain reactions to send garbage blocks to his unseen screen — but keep in mind your opponent's doing the same to you.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Nintendo Simultaneously released with Oracle of Seasons, this second Capcom-developed Zelda game is widely regarded as the more difficult of the two adventures, Oracle of Ages sees Link embark on a similar quest to that in Oracle of Seasons, in that he must rescue a beautiful woman from the clutches of an unspeakable evil. Link's adventure begins when he awakens in a strange forest deep within the land of Labrynna. By using the Harp of Ages, Link is able to transcend the very fabric of time, allowing him to jump between the past and present as the need arises. Complete the adventure to receive a password that can be used in Oracle of Seasons
Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO
Capcom With a title like Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO, this can be nothing more or less than an old-school, two-dimensional Capcom beat-'em-up. Love it or hate it, this is just the ticket for hard-core fighting fans. And boy, is this hard-core. Capcom is the company responsible for Street Fighter, and is the most famous Japanese developer of 2-D beat-'em-ups. SNK, on the other hand, is so old school it went bust in 2001.

Anyone who's ever played a beat-'em-up will know the basic rules of the genre—hit your opponent until they fall down—but Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO adds additional options that will keep fans happy for months. There are six different fighting styles (or grooves), a terribly complex ratio system for choosing a team of up to three fighters (although oddly there's no tag option), and a veritable feast of minor options and game modes.

Basically, if you like this sort of thing, you'll absolutely love Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO—except there's a rather big "but" coming up. As you may have noticed, the GameCube's controller isn't really very well suited to this sort of game, so Capcom has created a rather odd alternative control system that puts all the special moves within easy reach on the C-stick. Hard-core fans are likely to upchuck at the very thought, but it is relatively playable in a shallow, Mortal Kombat kind of way. Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker
Nintendo The Legend of Zelda series practically defined adventure gaming for an entire generation. Link, the hero of the adventure games, delighted millions by starring in games for each Nintendo console from the NES and Super NES to the Nintendo 64. Link brings this beloved franchise to the Nintendo GameCube in The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and he's more animated than ever.

The first thing you'll notice about The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker is that it looks completely different from any previous title in the franchise. Nintendo has opted to use cel-shading technology on Wind Waker; the result is that the game looks like a cartoon. Die-hard Zelda purists initially howled at this change, arguing that the game skews too young. I think it's fantastic. The cartoon animation style allows for better expression of the characters, and several of the animations—like Link trying to pick up an object that's too heavy—are so cute that you can't help but laugh a little.

The second thing you'll notice is a focus on wind. Instead of trotting around on foot, Link travels from island to island on a talking boat, but he doesn't get far without the wind blowing in right direction. Luckily, you'll learn how to change the direction of the wind early in the game, and you'll do so frequently—not only to power your boat but also to solve puzzles. Clever use of wind makes Wind Waker stand out from more conventional adventure games.

The third thing you'll notice is that the game is just plain fun. Puzzles are innovative and refreshing, and despite some tricky puzzles, I never felt too frustrated to keep playing. The locales you'll visit are invariably exotic and fun to explore, and the host of bizarre creatures you'll encounter (friendly and otherwise) are always a kick in the pants. Moreover, though the look is radically different, Wind Waker feels like a classic Zelda game. Veterans of the early games in the franchise will experience more than a bit of nostalgia while playing it.

The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker is everything you've come to expect from a Zelda game, and it's one of the best adventure games to date. This is a must-have title for any GameCube owner. —Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Crono bravely follows in pursuit, but the world into which he emerges is one of four centuries ago. In Chrono Trigger prepare yourself to journey into the forgotten past, distant future, and even to the very End of Time.

The Worlds of Past, Present and Future
In Chrono Trigger you'll journey back to Prehistory (65,000,000 B.C.) where humans and reptiles battle to wipe each other from existence. Antiquity (12,000 B.C.) is an age where the world is divided between people whose continent is buried in snow, and the magical kingdom of Zeal, a highly advanced civilization. The Middle Ages (600 A.D.) is an era of swords and sorcery, a dark time when the armies of Fiendlord rule over the land.

The Present (1000 A.D.) is the time period in which Crono, Lucca and Marle live. It is a bright and peaceful age. However, in the Future (2300 A.D.), an era of despair has taken hold with rogue machines ruling the world. After the day of the apocalypse in 1999 A.D., the prosperous civilization of humanity crumbled and the remaining people struggle to stay alive. And, finally, there remains the End of Time — a place with no era to call its own. This confluence of time's streams transcends spatiotemporal boundaries. It is here at the gravitational center for all temporal flotsam that Spekkio — the Master of War — serves as your guide on time's treacherous roads.

Battle Systems and gameplay
This game utilizes a revised version of the groundbreaking Active Time Battle (ATB) System. Chrono Trigger features exhilarating combat in which the clock is constantly ticking. Characters must first wait as the ATB gauges charge, and then perform an action. This makes strategic timing a crucial element in your battle plan. In addition to standard attacks, each character has an array of special Tech skills and powerful combos known as Dual and Triple Techs. Cooperate with other characters to unleash over 50 unique and devastating moves!

Chrono Trigger utilizes great story-telling, interesting characters, action-packed gameplay, and the unique controls of the Nintendo DS to deliver a fun and well-rounded role-playing game on a portable platform.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Ignition Entertainment Ltd A number of cursed blades exist throughout the world. Blades that thirst for blood the moment they’re drawn. Even those blades thought to be holy slowly become corrupted over time as they are used in hatred and drenched in blood. Those who wield these blades slowly become homicidal. The curses laid on these blades are said to condemn those who use them to tragic and untimely deaths. It is in the Genroki era, a period of time in which the shogun Tsumayoshi Tokogawa reigned, that the force of the damned began to emerge, threatening the peace and prosperity that had long existed in the world. The cursed blades became the focus of the greed, self-righteousness, and arrogance of those who’d gain possession of them, and inevitably it was these conflicting desires that led to war. As the flames of chaos and disaster spread, denizens from the netherworld were dragged into the confusion as not only the evil spirits were summoned by the swords, but the Dragon and Demon Gods as well. How will the destinies of those drawn to these cursed blades unfold?

When Link travels to the Twilight Realm, he transforms into a wolf and must scour the land with the help of a mysterious girl named Midna. Link's journeys, reinvented
Hailed by many as the best Zelda game since 1998's Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess thrusts players into a troubled world ravaged by a dangerous magic. Sporting a new, more realistic visual style than the previous Zelda title, Link looks much more like an adult than in previous installments and fits well into an environment that provides Zelda fans with a much more gritty and grim environment to explore. The entirety of the quest fits this darker mood, as both Link and NPC's alike share the same concern for the changes about in Hyrule.

More than just a spiritual successor to previous Zelda installments, Twilight Princess offers players a new way of controlling Link through dungeons, forests, towns, and the bizarre Twilight Realm: precise weapon controls with the Wii remote! Players can use the remote to control Links' weapons including the sword, arrows, and boomerang. This new control scheme allows for much faster and more accurate control than on previous Nintendo hardware. For example, waving the remote in the air will result in Link performing the same move with the sword. To fire off on arrow, players "pull back" on a virtual controller string as the Wii remote's speaker lets players know that the projectile is ready for release. It all works incredibly well and adds to the title's immersion and style- you feel more in the center of the action than in previous Zelda games.

As impressive as the new control scheme is, the scope and size of the new land of the Hyrule is equally as impressive- truly the Wii's first epic adventure. Beautifully crafted and four years in the making, the land players travel through is vast and diverse as the dungeons and monsters that lie within. As players collect triforce pieces from the distant sections of the continent, they will get to know many different villages and foes. Thankfully, Link will be able to move over long stretches of land faster thanks to "Epona," your faithful horse. Epona also helps Link become a more effective fighter, as a number of powerful and impressive sword strikes can be launched while galloping through fields of enemies.

The Twilight Realm awaits
Like most games in the Zelda franchise, Link begins his adventure with little more than the clothes he has on an an inkling that something has gone awry. After an initial trip to the Twilight Realm, in which Link appears as a wolf, a friendly shadow dweller named Midna will meet up with players and give helpful advice on gameplay. Fortunately for players, this virtual assistant spells out ways to be a more effective adventurer in and out of the shadow world. Early stages of the game have Link spending a lot of time in the Twilight Realm, and outdoor areas of Hyrule, attempting to clear areas of the strange darkness that has seemingly fallen over every village, forest, and field. As the story progresses, players will learn the cause of the shadows, and what they must to do vanquish them for good.

Puzzling puzzles
Link once again finds himself in a number of classic Zelda-esque puzzle scenarios in which he must light torches to unlock doors, raise and lower water levels, and fight enemies to collect keys and open chests for valuable rupees. A number of the dungeons present unique puzzle challenges that rely on the player's ability to hone their Wii remote's control, such as an air castle in the sky that can only be accessed by an extremely accurate grappling hook toss.

In general, Twilight Princess is more challenging than the average Zelda game, with a number of boss battles having protracted hit sequences with little support potions about, and even less warning. Still, there's never been an adventure experience such as this, wherein players can literally charge at a dungeon boss with their fists and punch the air to defeat an enormous foe. As the finest Zelda experience in almost ten years and the game fans have been waiting for, Twilight Princess will delight young and old gamers alike.

The primary tenet of Wii Fit is balance. Your center of balance, the point between your left and right sides when you stand upright, has a lot to do with your health. Those without an even center of balance will be unnaturally compensating for this imbalance, which causes their posture to become misaligned, increasing the possibility of putting unnecessary strain on their bodies. This is where the Wii Balance Board comes in.

Similar in appearance to a step aerobics board, the Wii Balance Board is much, much more. Easily capable of supporting weights up to a maximum of 300 pounds, it is sturdy and precise, able to measure weight and register pressure accurately when placed on a variety of flat surfaces. This advanced level of sensitivity allows for both the wide range of activities found in the Wii Fit software as well as the board's amazing ability recognize individual players by their weight alone.

Getting Started: Create a Profile
Before you jump into doing exercises and activities, you'll start by creating a profile. This is done easily and intuitively by simply choosing a Mii, entering your height and age information, and doing a few quick tests that will serve as a baseline for your new Wii fitness regimen. These tests are:BMI Check: BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is the standard used by agencies such as the World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health. To check your BMI, you'll enter your height then stand on the Wii Balance Board and let it read your weight.Wii Fit Age: After you've checked your BMI, you'll do a basic balance test and find out your current Wii Fit Age. This basic balance test measures how well you can control your left and right balance. Based on the results, you'll be assigned a Wii Fit Age.

Four Categories of Fun
Once you have created your profile it's time to have some fun. Wii Fit features four main categories of exercises to choose from: Strength Training, Aerobics, Yoga and Balance Games. Wii Fit will guide you through the first three with the help of your own virtual personal trainer, while the balance games offer variety and fun to help keep you engaged and excited about your fitness goals. In addition, as you spend time exercising, you'll earn Fit Credits that unlock additional exercises and activities within your favorite categories that will allow you to continue to push yourself. See more detail on the four categories below:Strength Training: Put your strength to the test with muscle-toning exercises like Single Leg Extension, Sideways Leg Lift, Arm and Leg Lift, Single-Arm Stand, Torso Twists, Rowing Squat, Single Leg Twist, Lunge, Push-Up and Side Plank, Jackknife, Plank and Tricep Extension. Challenges include Push-Up Challenge, Plank Challenge and Jackknife Challenge.Aerobics: Get your heart pumping with fun, interactive Aerobic exercises like Hula Hoop, Basic Step, Basic Run, Super Hula Hoop, Advanced Step, 2-P Run, Rhythm Boxing, Free Step and Free Run.Yoga: Work on your balance and flexibility with Yoga poses and activities like Deep Breathing, Half-Moon, Dance, Cobra, Bridge, Spinal Twist, Shoulder Stand, Warrior, Tree, Sun Salutation, Standing Knee, Palm Tree, Chair, Triangle and Downward-Facing Dog.Balance Games: Get into the action with fun, balanced-based games like Soccer Heading, Ski Slalom, Ski Jump, Table Tilt, Tightrope Walk, Balance Bubble, Penguin Slide, Snowboard Slalom and Lotus Focus.

Keep Track of Your Progress
Because keeping fit is an ongoing process, Wii Fit also tracks the activities you do the most and puts them into your Favorites category. With this information players can note exercises and activities that they are strong in, as well as others that may need to improve at. Some of the ways players can use this information for are to:Keep tabs on your daily progress with easy-to-understand graphs and charts. Using your personal profile, you can set goals, view a graph of your BMI results over time, see how many Fit Credits you've earned, check your Wii Fit Age and even enter exercise time you've done outside of Wii Fit. It's all about coming back and exercising a little every day, and the personal profile makes tracking your daily progress simple and easy.Quickly check your Wii Fit Age and BMI without even putting the game in the console by going directly to the Wii Fit Channel.Allow up to eight family members can create their own profiles in Wii Fit. At the end of each stage during the simultaneous multiplayer mode, you are ranked based on your score, the coins collected and the number of enemies defeated

Featuring out-of-this-world platforming across a wide array of unique planets and space environments, players can go it alone as Mario or team up with his old buddy Yoshi as they platform and puzzle-solve to their hearts content. View larger. New Out-of-this-world Adventure
Like its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an action platformer set in space. Platforming takes place between worlds, known as galaxies. Mario can move between smaller examples of these by jumping. He can also embark on longer jaunts via a small steerable planet in the shape of Mario's head, but as a new twist he can also move into and through planets as well using the new drill mechanism. This allows for both a new direction in action as well as an opening to problem-solving and coin collection. Players can expect the return of a variety of powerups from the original game including Bee and Boo Mushrooms, but also many that are new varieties including the Rock Mushroom that temporarily turns Mario into a rock that can smash through barriers. Another key change to gameplay is the ability for Mario to join with his pal Yoshi. Once Mario hatches Yoshi from his egg he can ride him through a variety of scenarios. Yoshi's particular reaction to specific powerups makes for fun with gravity. For example, when Yoshi eats a "Dash Pepper" he is able to move at hyper speed allowing the pair to literally run up the side of walls. Also, after eating a Blimp Fruit power-up Yoshi can swells up and floats like a blimp, taking Mario with him to areas of the game otherwise unreachable.

Key Game FeaturesMario collects stars as he travels from galaxy to galaxy. Every level is new, but the game retains the charm, sense of wonder and beauty in line with Mario's history. Mario works his way through the various levels, sometimes upside-down, sometimes floating from place to place. On some stages, Mario can find an egg, smash it open and hop onto the back of Yoshi. Yoshi can use his tongue to grab items and shoot them back at enemies, or to snag attach points and swing across chasms.Yoshi has an interesting diet. When he eats a Dash Pepper, he gets so hot and frenzied he can run up steep inclines and vertical walls. When he eats a Blimp Fruit, he inflates like a balloon and floats to new heights.New powerups include a drill that Mario uses to tunnel through the planet's surface all the way to the other side of a planet.Skilled players will want to collect new Comet Metals, which will unlock harder levels with even more challenges. Join the Color Revolutionaries to refine your skills while making a mess. The race to rescue Chroma City has just begun, and only de Blob can save the world from a black-and-white future.

Gameplay: de Blob's Primary Goal
de Blob is a 3D platformer where players use the Wii Remote/Nunchuck combo to maneuver their hero, de Blob. Equal parts amorphous blob of paint, struggling artist, revolutionary and juvenile delinquent, de Blob's goal is to replace the drab, lifeless gray coloring that the I.N.K.T. Corporation has imposed on Chroma City and its inhabitants, the Raydians, with a range of vibrant life-giving colors, all the while avoiding and battling the gray-clad forces of the Inkies.

Players must acquire paint and hurl de Blob at the buildings, walls, statues, roads and skies above Chroma City. As de Blob bounces around, adding color wherever he lands, his supply of paint is depleted and he begins to dry out. As this happens players must collect more paint and rehydrate in pools and in front of hydrants scattered across the city. As the game starts access is limited to the colors red, blue and yellow, but these can be blended to create a number of other colors. Being able to create and apply these colors becomes important as Chroma City and its inhabitants come to life, and de Blob makes contact with a range of other characters known as the 'Color Revolutionaries' and receives an increasing amount of missions that charge him with splattering color all over town. Success at these mission gains the player point which drives the game forward, eventually leading to a direct assault on Comrade Black's I.N.K.T. fortress guarded by elite Inky soldiers and massive ink turrets.

To ease this tension and to appease its citizens, the government has started pursuing a new round of wars. Mega Man Legends

They rely on an ancient power source driven by Quantum Refractors—a technology constantly sought out by explorers called diggers.
Mega Man Legends 2
Capcom Mega Man Legends 2 continues the successful 3-D spinoff of the 2-D Mega Man franchise. It features familiar characters from the series, and mixes action-adventure, RPG, and puzzle gameplay. Accompanying Mega Man are Roll, the Bonne family, the Servbots, Data, and Glyde. The story revolves around the recently discovered Sealed Key, which could unlock the Great Legacy—a mystery that could be either a boon or a curse to mankind. There are several towns in which to explore, and a giant airship called the Flutter will transport the party there.
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne
Capcom USA Inc. Mega Man's sassy female rival now has her own game, and it has a unique style all of its own. The Misadventures of Tron Bonne takes Mega Man Legends' 3-D engine and sprinkles in elements of puzzle games, role-playing games, and of course, action games to produce a unique and challenging hybrid game.

Tron has several missions to complete-but she does get a little help from some mechanical friends. The anime-style character is able to control a number of different robots, including a mech with treads and a digger. These friendly little robots, known as Servbots, can scout out new items that help in the game-but they must first be trained. Each little robot seems to have its own personality and is prone to laziness unless properly inspired.

Tron Bonne seems to have just the right mix of graphics and gameplay, as well as cute voice acting and a memorable cast of characters. It may not be Mega Man Legends 2, but The Misadventures of Tron Bonne should satisfy fans of the popular series. —Robb Guido

Chocobo's Dungeon 2
FOR SONY PLAYSTATION BY SQUARESOFT HARD TO FIND GAME. LOTS OF FUN. SONY PLAYSTATION GAME VERSION. CHOCOBO'S DUNGEON 2 VIDEO GAME SONY PLAYSTATION VIDEO GAME. MADE BY SQUARESOFT. GREAT COLLECTOR'S ITEM. A MUST BUY. ALL-TIME CLASSIC. HOURS OF GREAT SUPER FUN. HIGH REPLAY VALUE. GREAT FOR ALL AGES. HERE IS SOME MINOR INFO ON THE GAME. Editorial Review Chocobo, that cute birdlike creature of Final Fantasy fame, returns in its very own role-playing adventure. The cutesy appeal of Chocobo's Dungeon 2 may look as if it is aimed at younger players, but there is enough depth here to satisfy older gamers. For starters, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 lets two players partner in gameplay as they search several randomly generated dungeons that are full of traps, strange devices, and monsters, making the difficulty increase as the game progresses. Players can combine armor or weapons to form stronger resources in their quest. There are also magic feathers that can aid in your efforts, since they allow gamers to perform magic spells that have an impact on combat. Between your dungeon travels, players are able to explore villages to obtain valuable clues for the journey. In addition, players can use this time to update Chocobo's inventory. Overall, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a great game for players looking to get a start in role-playing games. This title is a safe entry point to this often-complex game genre. —Robb Guido Pros: * Randomly generated dungeons provide variety * Armor and weapons can be combined to form stronger armor and weapons Cons: * The story is not as engaging as those of other Squaresoft games GameSpot Review In the beginning, electronic RPGs were little more than simplistic dungeon hacks. Gamers sat before their neon-green terminals, guiding their ASCII hero through randomly generated, maze-like dungeons, collecting items, weapons, and armor as they went.

YOU DON'T KNOW JACK
Playstation You Don't Know Jack, a popular and irreverent trivia game previously available only on the Internet and computers, has come to the PlayStation. At seven or 21 questions in length, this game is fast, furious, and difficult. Every subject imaginable from pop culture to math is covered through five types of questions: multiple choice, impossible (some very random facts), ThreeWay, DisOrDat, and Jack Attack.

ThreeWay questions require you to buzz in when the correct answer is highlighted among three onscreen choices, while DisOrDat asks you to correctly group words into two or more categories while the clock ticks away. The game gets particularly heated during Jack Attack mode, which challenges gamers to buzz in when they see a word or phrase that matches a specific clue.

Reading fast and buzzing in quickly are beneficial skills. Although the designers didn't add much in the way of graphics or extras for this version, there are two discs full of questions to avoid repetition. Some phrasings and topics aren't suitable for the pre-teen and younger players because they consist of bodily functions, profanity, or sex. Up to three contestants can play, but you'll need a Multi Tap (sold separately). —Carrie Bell

To conquer Alphacore, you must pilot an armed free-floating robot named Omega Boost through 19 diverse zones and, ultimately, travel back in time to stop Alphacore from changing history. Basically, the gameplay of Omega Boost is incredibly straightforward. Simply blow up each enemy that stands in your way. Enemies come in all shapes, sizes, and strengths. We were impressed with the amount of detail put into each enemy—in fact, we often paused the game so that we could better examine each enemy being blown to smithereens. Each zone has a collection of small enemies, a sub- boss, and a boss to conquer.

Ten thousand years prior, the Dragon War pitted Dragoons—humans with the power to control dragons—against Enslavers, magicians who sought to enslave the humans. Now Dart, a young warrior, is on a quest to find the demon that killed his parents. The Legend of Dragoon features prerendered, 3-D backgrounds and detailed, polygonal figures. Several nonplaying characters and many full-motion video scenes take you through the complex story. The game's turn-based battle engine allows you to increase the strength of an attack through repeated button taps and shows the percentage increase you've created. A timing feature in the battle modes allows you to add devastating combinations to your attacks. Chocobo Racing
Square Enix Combining the action/adventure and racing genres, Chocobo Racing follows in the footsteps of popular "car-toon" titles Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart. While the cutesy bird character Chocobo lacks the mainstream notoriety of Mario or Crash, the kooky creature will likely appeal to fans of the popular Final Fantasy series. Chocobo makes a successful flight from sidekick to star in this quirky racer, which features seven competing cartoon characters including White Mage, Mog, and Golem.

All of the racing characters possess special powers and unique tracks designed around their personas. Chocobo Racing contains five challenging racing modes, including grand prix (four-track tournament), time attack, versus (two-player racing), relay race, and story mode. We were particularly intrigued by the story mode, which places Chocobo in an old-fashioned pop-up storybook as he aims to collect several scattered blue crystals.

We also liked the high replay value of this game. For example, a racing victory may reward players with the ability to customize a character. Chocobo Racing is far from a sophisticated racer—and, in fact, that is part of the appeal. This is an easy game to learn, so younger players can pick up a controller and play with little trouble. Still, plenty of challenges hide in the detailed tracks, which are filled with time-zapping traps and treacherous curves. —Carrie Bell

Pros:Diverse tracks and charactersWill appeal to fans of Crash Team Racing and Mario KartCons:Weak steering and vehicle controlCartoon theme may not appeal to die-hard racing fansNot compatible with multiplayer adapter, so simultaneous racing is limited to 2 players
Einhander
Square Enix There's no denying that the space shooter isn't what it used to be. The once-thriving genre, championed by such classics as Gradius and Raiden, has boiled down to more of a nostalgic pastime. People just aren't as jazzed about blowing away hordes of alien space ships and racking up billions of points like before. While the occasional shooter still shows up every now and then, it seems like it'd take a miracle for a company to produce one that would rejuvenate the genre and renew public interest. Leave it to Squaresoft to accept the challenge. And while the fruit of its efforts may not be the miracle this genre needs for a complete revival, it's just about as good as shooters get. Einhander isn't particularly long, but shooters almost never are. The half dozen or so stages are seamlessly interconnected and demand just over an hour to plow through in total. Each stage - in fact, each part of each stage - grows progressively more difficult, such that you'll constantly face new challenges in the form of smarter, meaner enemies and more of them. Likewise, the mid and end-level bosses will constantly keep you guessing, as they tend to be both unpredictable and versatile in their attack styles. Even shooter veterans will have their hands full with Einhander, though multiple difficulty settings make the game accessible and enjoyable even for those whose hand-eye coordination isn't what it used to be.
Final Fantasy VII
Square Enix
Saga Frontier 2
Square Enix A beautifully illustrated fantasy role-playing game, SaGa Frontier 2 features lush, hand-painted watercolor backgrounds that give this animated title a rich, storybook look. Two-dimensional graphics have rarely looked this good in an adventure game.

Pretty pictures aside, the battle system in SaGa Frontier 2 is outstanding, allowing for combat to be as micromanaged or as mindless as players see fit. In addition to assigning in-battle character roles (such as support, intimidation, and so on), players can choose between multiple battle modes and execute elaborate attack combos (similar to that of fighting games).

Like its predecessor, SaGa Frontier 2 puts a spin on the genre by featuring multiple storylines that converge at various points in the game. Events in the game are encapsulated into (mostly) playable scenarios, with new playable scenarios opening up as the existing ones are completed. While this feature enables gamers to experience nonlinear gameplay from different perspectives, it ultimately muddles rather than enhances the game's overall narrative. —Joe Hon

Pros:
Beautiful storybook lookOutstanding battle systemMulti-scenario feature allows for nonlinear gameplay

Cons:
Repetitive random battlesLimited appeal outside of fans of the genre
Vagrant Story
Square Enix Vagrant Story is one of those games that wows you at the start—a big "WOW!" in this case—but maintains only a tenuous hook in the long haul. In this mix of action/adventure and fantasy role-playing, players are cast as a Riskbreaker (think one-man army) named Ashley Riot, whose pursuit of a villainous cult leader takes him to the mysterious city of Lea Monde.

The highly stylized graphics in Vagrant Story are easily some of the best ever seen on the PlayStation, and give the game a gorgeous, distinctive look to match its somber tone. Cinematic story sequences blend in almost seamlessly with gameplay, which takes place in 3-D environments (viewed from a third-person perspective) that can be rotated to provide the best angle.

Vagrant Story features a rich battle system that's built on both strategy and quick reflexes. In addition to character statistics, weapons and armor have detailed numbers of their own and can be disassembled, assembled, or even combined to create new items. Hand/eye coordination factors heavily into combat, as Ashley develops offensive and defensive battle abilities that require perfectly timed button pushing in order to be used.

Unfortunately, it's all too easy to get bored with Vagrant Story. The painfully linear gameplay here doesn't rise above killing enemy after enemy in room after room, and (oh boy!) solving puzzles by manipulating boxes. If not for the wholly intriguing (but sparsely littered) plot, one would be strongly tempted just to leave Ashley to rot in the catacombs beneath Lea Monde. —Joe Hon

Pros:Highly stylized graphicsRich battle systemIntriguing plotCons:Shallow, linear gameplay

LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue
Working Designs Lunar 2: Eternal Blue is old-school role-playing goodness at its very best. From the story to the simple battle system, it doesn't bore players with the details that can make newer role-playing games unbearable. No, Lunar 2 won't impress anyone with its likewise old-school graphics, but that's not the point. This game is fun.

The story in Lunar 2 doesn't take itself as seriously as other role-playing games, which contributes to the fun. The game's hero, Hiro, and his sidekick Ruby must help a young girl locate the goddess Althena. The quest turns out to be long, spanning three disks, most of which hold full-motion video cutscenes.

The video sequences in Lunar 2 are probably the best part. They mix Japanese anime with computer graphics and are completely stunning. The in-game graphics, on the other hand, are ported straight from the 16-bit Sega CD, with a few enhancements, so those who like eye candy should consider themselves warned. —Robb Guido

Pros:Light and funSuper movie sequences that mix anime and computer graphicsCons:Outdated graphics

Grandia
Game Arts If you can put up with the cutesy graphics, Grandia is one of the longest, most compelling, and most character-driven role-playing games you'll ever spin in your PlayStation. By the time we finished this massive quest, we really cared about the game's characters. (By comparison, our interest in Final Fantasy VII was focusing more on getting from one transition movie scene to the next).

The main story line is standard role-playing fare. The powerful General Baal has plans to unleash something of a Pandora's box on the world, and you can guess whose job it is to stop him. Grandia provides a world packed with colorful characters who are fun to talk to, and the unconventional combat system lets players pick and choose their fights. The characters in your party grow, as do their magical skills and weapons, meaning there's always some new accomplishment just around the corner that keeps players adventuring long into the night. Role-playing fans should be overjoyed that this conversion from the Sega Saturn classic was made, as it provides weeks of solid adventuring that never becomes a chore. —T. Byrl Baker

Pros:An entertaining adventure with loads of interesting charactersCharacters, weapons, and spells all improve with experienceCons:Quirky, cutesy graphics won't appeal to everybody
Wild Arms 2
Sony The forces of evil are at work again, and it's up to a boy, a sorceress, and a rebel to turn the tide in Wild Arms 2, Sony's latest role-playing game.

Each character starts out alone and must fight bosses and enemies as well as develop his or her own personal set of special moves. Aside from the traditional turn-based fighting, Wild Arms 2 throws in a bit of action, and characters get weapons that they can use to solve puzzles.

The graphics in this game are fully 3-D with huge bosses, but the story is a little thin. It's your typical "beat the megalomaniac before he takes over the world" plot, which players familiar with the genre have seen far too often in games past. Still, there's a large cast of characters, with the playable characters eventually joining forces, and it's fun getting them there. For fans of action role-playing games, this one shouldn't be missed. —Robb Guido

Pros:Action blended into traditional turn-based fighting gameplayThree characters, each playable separatelyCons:Doesn't emphasize story as much as gameplay
Legend of Mana
Square Enix Though it lacks the dramatic intensity of the Final Fantasy series—the crown prince of console role-playing games—SquareSoft—SquareSoft's Legend of Mana still satisfies with its beautiful hand-drawn sets and its innovative nonlinear gameplay.

Billed as the sequel to the Super Nintendo's Secrets of Mana, Legend of Mana's story contains more than 60 self-contained miniquests, but generally the goal is to restore the world's Mana, or life energy. Gamers won't need to be obsessive about winning all the quests, but there are some challenges that must be completed if you wish to reach the final showdown. The game begins as players choose either a male or female lead character while a map displays the new lands within the world of Fa'Diel. In each of these lands, players will find items and clues they can use in other lands. The fragmented nature of the game can be disorienting for gamers looking for quick gratification. A diary can be used to keep track of current miniquests, while an encyclopedia neatly organizes the vast amount of story players uncover. Due to the vast nature of this game's plot, you'll likely need these features to stay focused on your quests.

Anime fans will be wowed by the character design and beautifully illustrated storybook backgrounds. The game includes a Pokémon-style monster-raising element, which is surprising for a teen-rated RPG, but it works well. —Porter Hall

Pros:Pokémon-style monster raising adds nice nurturing element to RPG tasksNonlinear quest system makes story engrossingStunning hand-drawn backgrounds

Cons:Music is at times absurdly overdramaticSecond player controls character only during battle

game play and style are similar to Persona 3, but there are plenty of new twists and additions. View larger. Myth and Occult Mixed with Contemporary Japan
Megami Tensei was originally based on the novel series Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani. A major franchise in the RPG genre, MegaTen games take place in the contemporary or near-future Japan, mixing occult and cyberpunk elements. The games feature mythological references from multiple mythologies, and the player is often asked to make moral or philosophical choices that affect the game's storyline and ending.

The silent male protagonist who represents the player in Persona 4 attends Yasogami High School with Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko. His entire personality and name is decided and portrayed by the player's in-game actions and decisions. He wields two-handed sword type weapons, but unlike Persona 3, he doesn't use alternative weapons.

Mysterious Murders Abound
Persona 4 takes place in a rural town named Inaba where mysterious murders occur whenever there is fog after heavy rain. The town has a television channel that airs only at midnight called Mayonaka TV, during which it is said that one can see their "other half" while staring at the screen. After hearing about a recent unsolved murder, some characters realize that they had witnessed the murder victim while watching Mayonaka TV.

The protagonist discovers that during midnight when the channel is on, his body can phase into his television set, using the set as a gateway to another world infested with shadows. Mayonaka TV and the town murders seem so connected that it's possible that the victims may in fact victims of Mayonaka TV itself. The characters decide to solve the mysterious murders by exploring the hidden world of Mayonaka TV.

Brand-New Yet Familiar game play
Persona 4's game play and style are similar to the popular Persona 3. Players familiar with Persona 3 will quickly recognize the social links and dungeon crawling game play, as well as the engine itself. The battles also have some similarities, such as the One More system, All-out attack, and the AI controlled support characters.

However, unlike Persona 3, characters can be set to take commands from the player, new glasses allow characters to see through the heavy mist inside Mayonaka TV, and tarot cards can be shattered to summon the characters' respective Persona. Other changes include an increase in player stats from three to five, and the removal of health status, allowing players to explore dungeons continuously.

Let the Action Begin
Battle-wise, Persona 4 lets you directly control the actions of other party members and continually exploit an enemy's weakness. Post-battle card shuffles have added Arcana Chance, which bring you good or bad status depending on the Arcana. Battles now occur after school instead of at midnight, like in Persona 3, giving the player less time in which to do social activities. This turns out to be significant because Social Links now have a greater effect on battle.

At higher levels, the player's allies progress from occasionally protecting the protagonist from a deathblow, through occasionally offering follow-up attacks, to eventually allow the persona of the corresponding ally to evolve into another persona. And persona can retain or even lose weaknesses and can be immune to certain kind of magic attacks. All allies who have their corresponding Social Link levels maxed out now have a chance to survive an otherwise fatal attack, leaving them with one remaining HP.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Namco The original Klonoa for the PlayStation was a critically acclaimed 2-D platform game, but it was mostly ignored by consumers. Gamers passed on it partially because of its unfamiliar and unusual lead character, Klonoa, a furry critter with a giant pair of ears tipped with extremities. Hopefully PlayStation2 owners will not suffer from a similar aural phobia because they'll be missing a fine game in the sequel. Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil takes the excellent gameplay of its predecessor and puts it in a 3-D world. The game offers a nice mix of graphics, gameplay, and sound—albeit for a relatively short time.

Fans of games such as Sonic Adventure and Crash Bandicoot will love this title. It plays similarly to those games, but with superior camera control. Although the graphics are technically impressive—excellent use of lighting effects, particle effects, and cel shading—it—it's the style that really stands out. The bright and playful graphics give off a feel-good vibe without being puerile. Unfortunately, all these lovely aspects are found in a game that most players will finish in fewer than 10 hours. Sure, there are some secrets and puzzles, but nothing that's truly challenging. It's a brief experience, but one of the best on the PlayStation2. —Raymond M. Padilla

Xenosaga
Namco The ambitiously named Xenosaga: Episode 1—Der Wille zer Macht is an epic-sized space opera that opens in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The story follows several space-dwelling citizens as they aim to unlock the secrets of the universe. The specifics of those secrets presumably will be revealed over subsequent editions of the Xenosaga series (after all, this is only Episode 1)—but a vital clue is held in the elusive Zohar, a mysterious artifact that is aggressively sought by evil aliens. Without spoiling the plot's surprising twists, let's just say the game's German subtitle "Der Wille zur Macht" (translated as "The Will to Power") is a less-than-subtle ode to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who is considered as one of the precursors of existentialism.

Like many conventional RPG titles, Xenosaga's gameplay balances between exploration and battle modes. The game designers have thankfully spared players from any ill-conceived random battle sequences. Instead, you can concentrate directly on your quest without the repetitious enemy battles.

The designers also did a good job balancing a traditional RPG structure with complex themes. However, the game seems to go out of its way to casually integrate controversial (and frankly creepy) religious imagery into the context of the game. Some may find the game offensive and disturbing; others will likely find it intellectually stimulating.

Namco promises about 80 hours of gaming—but a good portion of that is non-interactive full-motion video. While the stretched-out cutscenes do add considerable depth to the characters, they're often poorly paced and too long—one takes an alarming 30 minutes to unfold! The addition of more background music might have helped to pick up the pacing, since the obligatory soundtrack is strangely absent at some critical plot points.

With impressive animation and unexpected plot points, Xenosaga: Episode 1—Der Wille zer Macht is easily one of the more enjoyable RPG titles to hit the PS2. While this isn't for the happy-go-lucky gaming crowd (see Kingdom Hearts), adult-minded gamers will likely be consumed by the darkness and devious delights offered within this twisted title. —Brett Atwood

Pros:Complex characters and story themesNo random battle sequencesImpressive 3-D animationCons:Long, long, looooooooong cut scenes

Guilty Gear X2
Sammy Guilty Gear X2 is a simple, fun 2-D fighting game with quirky characters and a variety of options that allow for a customized gaming experience. A perfect blend of old-school 2-D gameplay (think Street Fighter) and responsive controls makes it very easy to get started. You get to control a host of oddball characters (20 different fighters are unlocked at the start) who all have detailed profiles and continually animate during the game. Some characters come with guest characters that make appearances during or after the fight. Backgrounds contain detailed animations and changes in weather. A decent selection of generic fighting-game music rounds out the title.

GGX2 offers nine different game modes: arcade, Medal Gauge, vs. 2P, vs. CPU, training, survival, mission, story, and gallery. All modes are available at the beginning of the game. Story mode adds anime-style background and unlockable cinemas that can be saved to a memory card. Mission mode offers up a fully detailed system to control all aspects of battle, and Medal Gauge allows for new combos by building up a collection of medals.

Aerial battles are similar to a Marvel vs. Capcom-style game and allow for some amazing combo possibilities. A return from Guilty Gear X is the Gauge meter, which allows for explosive attacks that will sometimes fill up the entire screen. Instant Kill is also back in this version and is similar to a Mortal Kombat fatality—but occurs during the match.

Guilty Gear is one of the premier 2-D fighting-game franchises, and GGX2 lives up to the legacy. Instead of the series entering the world of three dimensions, we are given a two-dimensional feast of options, great graphics, and gameplay. —Carlos Rodela

You'll meet and get advice from many familiar faces. View larger. The Prologue
The story begins with Sora, Donald and Goofy wandering through endless fields. Eventually, they come to a crossroad. Standing in the crossroads, Sora gazes up at the night sky and thinks of his lost friends.

From the distance, a mysterious man approaches from one of the roads. "Ahead lies something you need," he says, "but to claim it you must lose something dear." The man vanishes, revealing a single path that leads to the eery Castle Oblivion, which resembles a girl's drawing.

The Story
After this encounter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go their separate ways. Soon, on a night when his island home is besieged by a mysterious storm, Sora is whisked away to an unfamiliar burg known as Traverse Town. There he meets Donald and Goofy, and learns that there are strange things happening in the world.

Donald and Goofy set off to look for their missing king, and Sora joins them to search for his lost friend, Riku. After a long journey that takes them across numerous worlds, Sora and friends finally find Riku and the lost king. But to save all the worlds, Sora must use his Keyblade to close the door to darkness, even though Riku and the king are on the other side. Believing the king's parting words — there will always be a door to the light — Sora locks the door, and the trio sets out on yet another journey.

The Characters
The cast of Chain of Memories combines Kingdom Hearts characters with familiar Disney faces. Sora, is a 14-year-old boy and the hero of this tale. Although a little naive, Sora has an uncommon sense of justice. On his journey, Sora is accompanied by Donald, a court wizard who shares a striking resemblance to Donald the Duck of Disney fame, and the clumsy, easy-going captain of the Disney Castle Royal Knights, Goofy.

Other characters include the mysterious, shrouded man from the crossroads; Sora's lost friend, Riku, a 15-year-old boy who is cool and collected; the lost King, who bares a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse; and Kairi, a 14-year-old girl who's friends with Sora and Riku. Almost more strange than the man at the crossroads, a mysterious girl, Namine, draws pictures inside Castle Oblivion under close surveillance of an evil organization. As the story alludes, she may hold the key to Sora's most special memories.

Crazy Taxi
"Sega of America, Inc." If you think it's hard to flag down a cab in a big city, try driving one in Sega's zany straight-from-the-arcade port of Crazy Taxi. If you're one of the teeming fans who eagerly played Crazy Taxi in the arcade at a buck a pop, then this game is a must-buy, if only from a purely economic standpoint. Even those who don't know the difference between Crazy Taxi and the long-running TV series Taxi will immediately recognize the appeal of this game. In fact, this game is so impressive and addictive that it should easily convince a whole new wave of buyers to purchase a Sega Dreamcast.

What's so hot about Crazy Taxi? For starters, the graphics sport the most impressive re-creation of a living city ever seen in a video game. The level of detail is astounding and never ceases to surprise the player as block after unique block speeds by. The city is a distilled version of San Francisco with some landmarks and neighborhoods left intact. Making it seem all the more real are apparent product placements of real-world retail locations such as KFC, Tower Records, and Pizza Hut. And just about everything you see on the screen is interactive: boxes, phone booths, and mailboxes topple when bumped or smashed, pedestrians leap and tumble out of your path, and the myriad of traffic attempts to avoid your erratic high-speed antics. While some driving games brag about a lack of boundaries, this one delivers—players drive on the ocean floor, off the second floor of a parking garage, through parks, and down stairs. A helpful hovering arrow points drivers in the correct direction, but you can truly drive wherever you want at any time, making for tons of replay value.

While the game is a direct port from the arcade game of the same name, there's plenty more depth in the home version. In addition to the city that appears in the coin-op version, the Dreamcast version also includes an entirely new city. Crazy Taxi includes a trunk-load of mini-games that help to teach drivers how to perform the special speed boosts and maneuvers in the game.

Though this game would be plenty exciting without any sounds at all, it has an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack supplied by punk crossover bands the Offspring and Bad Religion, as well as some good, if sometimes monotonous, dialogue between the driver and the passengers. —Jeff Young

Pros:Wonderful, realistic graphicsEasy to get into, and full of many long hours of addictive playEven more to offer than the fantastic arcade game upon which this is basedCons:On very few occasions players will encounter some graphic slowdown
Jet Grind Radio
"Sega of America, Inc." In Jet Grind Radio, you play a whacked out kid who's completely torqued off about the system. It seems that the city of Tokyoto is not terribly kid-friendly and wants to keep things neat and pretty. You, the skater punk, figure that the only way to rebel is with your inline skates and a couple of cans of Krylon. That kind of attitude can lead to trouble when you're in the real world; but, in the world of Jet Grind Radio, there are no paint fumes, and it's all done in the name of fun and scoring points.

Jet Grind Radio's gameplay has some of the feel of Crazy Taxi. As you skate, you see little floating arrows that indicate where you should go (and where you should be tagging). Also, like in Crazy Taxi, the pace of the game is absolutely nonstop. There is moving traffic in the street, and nearly everything can be jumped, hopped, or ground. Underscoring all of this action is a DJ at the local hip-hop station, who spins cool tunes while you tear up Little Tokyoto.

The game starts out with a training course that's designed to bring you up to speed. Pay good attention to this section; it teaches you the basics, and you're tested on one of the lessons right away. Learning how to hop over obstacles while keeping a rail grind going is particularly helpful.

After graduating into the real game, you have the option of going it cool or easing up and figuring out how to do the flips, splits, and other midair antics that make this game so much fun. Once your skating skills are set, you'll learn the spray-can side of things. You pick up cans of paint as you maneuver around (keep your eyes open—some cans are placed in those hard-to-reach places, so that you'll have to catch serious air to get them). After securing your fill, use the left trigger and the analog to spray as you pass by areas that have been indicated by the arrows.

The game's tunes are right on schedule. Much of the Japanese soundtrack has been

Grandia II
UBI Soft See if this sounds familiar: You're from an outcast mercenary class that upstanding folk don't want around until there's trouble. You're sent on a mission with an innocent, idealistic woman with whom you don't immediately get along. Forces of darkness, safely contained until recently, have escaped and are threatening a world-ending clash with the forces of light, unless you successfully intercede. This is one of the safest templates for console role-playing games, as well as the story in Grandia II.

Thankfully, however, everything else in the game is fresh and provides hours upon hours of fun. The backdrops and character designs are colorful without being flashy, the game has a great pace (for an RPG), and players never have to stand around too long for the next thing to do. Even the writing, within its cookie-cutter plot, is smart, well translated, and occasionally funny.

The game's strongest element, though, is its battle system. Taking the best of turn-based and real-time battle engines, Grandia II forces you to choose your moves carefully with respect to timing and position. The battles are very simple in the beginning, but grow increasingly complex as you fight larger numbers of monsters with a growing party of allies. How you meet your encounters—whether you initiate the fight, are ambushed, or meet head on—affects both the timing of the blows and the positions of the contestants. Battles emphasize counterattacks and combination blows, but you'll soon find that movement and defense keep you alive against the tougher enemies. Elemental magic, items, and skill books are just icing on the cake. Even if the battles do grow old, the random fights are fairly easy to avoid, and a versatile AI option lets you cruise-control through the rest.

Grandia II may just be the traditional role-playing game that Dreamcast owners have been waiting for. The question of whether or not it is too traditional doesn't matter, since it offers a better experience than most that have come before. —Porter B. Hall

With RPG Maker for the PlayStation, would-be game designers can finally create their own digital world. All you need is a PlayStation, a little imagination, a lot of time, and you can create your own Final Fantasy, Ogre Battle, or Dragon Warrior adventure—sort of. It takes teams of 50 to 100 people two to three years to design and create the RPGs that we play today. If you think you've got the patience to do it on your own, then this game (or should we say set of tools) has a lot to offer.

Write, design, and control everything from the story line to dungeon designs, to organizing and constructing the towns in your game. You can even choose item locations, weapons, and enemy hit-point totals. Such standard, modern-day RPG elements are all at your disposal here. For those who really want to go for all the gusto, you can design and animate your own characters from scratch! The animation quality doesn't approach a Disney level, but at least the option is there.

This isn't a plug-and-play type of title; it will take you quite some time just to figure out where you want to start. If you don't have the patience to play a traditional RPG to the finish, then you might want to pass on RPG Maker. For everyone else, there's no better place to start! —Todd Mowatt
